Smurfs

The Smurfs (French: *Les Schtroumpfs*; Dutch: *De Smurfen*) is a Belgian comic franchise that revolves around a fictional colony of small, blue, human-like creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses deep in the forest. The Smurfs were first created by Belgian comic artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958 and were initially introduced under the name *Les Schtroumpfs*.

There are over 100 different Smurf characters, each with names based on adjectives that highlight their unique traits. For example, "Jokey Smurf" is known for playing practical jokes on his fellow Smurfs. *Smurfette* was the first female Smurf introduced to the series. The Smurfs are easily recognized by their signature Phrygian caps, a symbol of freedom that has historical significance. 

The Smurfs have since become a beloved part of pop culture, with numerous comic books, animated TV shows, films, and merchandise created over the years.
